What happens when you combine one of the world’s most advanced electric mountain bikes with genuine expedition-ready carrying capacity? You get the 2027 Specialized S-Works Levo 4 X — a machine designed to blur the boundaries between high-performance trail bike, bikepacking platform, everyday transport and off-road adventure vehicle.

Specialized calls the concept Electric Overland, and that description fits. This is not a conventional cargo bike with mountain-bike tyres added as an afterthought. Underneath the racks is the celebrated S-Works Levo 4: a powerful, technologically advanced and highly capable full-suspension electric mountain bike.
The difference is that the Levo 4 X can now carry the equipment needed to turn a quick trail ride into an overnight escape.
A proper Levo underneath the luggage racks

The foundation of the Levo 4 X is a Specialized FACT 11m carbon frame with 150mm of rear-wheel travel, adjustable geometry and weather-resistant SWAT storage built into the downtube.
At the front is a 160mm FOX 38 Factory fork with the highly adjustable GRIP X2 damper. Rear suspension is controlled by a FOX Float X Factory shock incorporating Specialized’s GENIE suspension technology.
GENIE is designed to provide sensitivity and traction over smaller bumps while progressively increasing support deeper in the travel. That gives the Levo 4 X the comfort required for long days in the saddle without sacrificing control on hard landings, rough rock gardens or fast, technical descents.
The bike uses a mixed-wheel configuration, with a 29-inch front wheel for rollover ability and stability and a 27.5-inch rear wheel for manoeuvrability. It is a combination that helps the bike remain responsive despite its powerful motor, large battery and cargo-carrying hardware.
Serious power that remains controllable

At the centre of the Levo 4 X is Specialized’s S-Works 3.1 motor, producing up to 850 watts of peak power and 111Nm of torque.
Those numbers are impressive, but outright output is only part of the story. Specialized has concentrated heavily on making the motor’s assistance feel smooth and predictable. Rather than delivering power like an on-off switch, the system responds to the rider’s input and progressively amplifies it.
That control is especially valuable when climbing loose, steep or technical terrain. Too much assistance delivered too suddenly can cause the rear tyre to spin or push the bike off line. The Levo’s natural-feeling delivery helps the rider maintain traction while still providing the support needed to move a fully loaded bike uphill.

Assistance settings, ride data and system information are displayed on the integrated 2.2-inch MasterMind TCU. Riders can further customise the bike through the Specialized app, while Apple Find My compatibility adds another useful layer of security.
An 840Wh battery built for long days
The motor is powered by a removable 840Wh battery, with Specialized quoting up to approximately 4.4 hours of riding under suitable conditions. Actual range will naturally vary according to the rider’s weight, assistance mode, terrain, climbing, tyre pressure, weather and the amount of equipment being carried.
Riders planning extended adventures should therefore treat any quoted duration as a guide rather than a guarantee. For bigger journeys, an optional 280Wh range extender increases total onboard capacity to 1,120Wh. The modular system also allows the main battery to be removed, making charging and battery management easier during multi-day trips.
Specialized’s 12-amp smart charger offers several charging modes and can recharge the battery from zero to 80 per cent in under an hour under appropriate conditions. That can make a meaningful difference during lunch stops, café breaks or overnight trips where charging time is limited.
The feature that creates Electric Overland
The defining feature of the Levo 4 X is its purpose-built front and rear rack system. Together, the racks provide a total carrying capacity of 22 kilograms:
- Up to 10kg on the front rack
- Up to 12kg on the rear rack
- MIK three-pin compatibility at the rear for quickly attaching compatible bags and accessories

Rather than simply bolting a conventional rack onto the moving part of the suspension, Specialized engineered the system to manage cargo through the bike’s chassis. The aim is to minimise the effect of the load on suspension performance and preserve as much of the familiar Levo handling as possible.
That opens an enormous range of possibilities. The bike can carry camping equipment, food, additional clothing, trail-building tools, photography gear, fishing equipment, work supplies or groceries. It can be loaded for a remote overnight ride in the Blue Mountains and then used for the Monday commute.
The racks can also be removed when they are not required, allowing the bike to return to something much closer to a conventional high-performance Levo.
Premium components throughout

As an S-Works model, the Levo 4 X receives a suitably high-end component package.
Gear changes are handled by a wireless SRAM XX Eagle T-Type AXS drivetrain with a wide-range 10–52-tooth cassette. The transmission is designed to shift under load — an important characteristic on an electric mountain bike where considerable torque can pass through the drivetrain during steep climbs.
SRAM Maven Ultimate four-piston brakes provide stopping power, with a large 220mm front rotor and 200mm rear rotor. That combination is especially valuable when controlling a bike that may be carrying both a rider and more than 20 kilograms of equipment.
Roval Traverse HD hookless carbon wheels use DT Swiss 240 hubs and are fitted with aggressive Specialized tyres: a 29 x 2.4-inch Butcher at the front and a 27.5 x 2.4-inch Eliminator at the rear. A RockShox Reverb AXS wireless dropper post, Race Face carbon handlebar, Industry Nine stem and S-Works Power Mirror saddle complete a flagship-level build.
The complete bike weighs approximately 27.25kg in size S4, although the final figure varies with frame size and component differences. It is not a lightweight cross-country bike, but the weight needs to be considered alongside the motor, 840Wh battery, long-travel suspension and integrated rack system.
How does it perform with luggage?

Without cargo, independent testing has found that the Levo 4 X feels remarkably close to the regular Levo 4. It retains a sporty riding position, confident suspension and the ability to handle fast trails, technical rock sections and long descents.
Loading any bike with camping equipment inevitably changes its behaviour. With significant weight on the racks, the Levo 4 X becomes less agile and requires more deliberate steering and braking. Range will also decrease as the motor works harder to accelerate the additional mass.
Careful packing is therefore important. Heavier equipment should be positioned as low and centrally as the rack and bag arrangement allows, with the load distributed between the front and rear. Riders should also adjust tyre pressures and suspension settings to account for the additional weight.
The important point is not that the Levo 4 X handles exactly the same when carrying 20 kilograms. Physics makes that impossible. Its achievement is that it remains a controllable and genuinely trail-capable mountain bike while carrying equipment that would normally require a large backpack or a very different style of bicycle.
From singletrack to everyday transport
The Levo 4 X has several distinct personalities. For adventure riders, it is an electric bikepacking platform capable of carrying shelter, sleeping equipment, food and tools into areas that would be difficult to reach on a conventional cargo bike.
For trail builders and outdoor workers, it can transport tools and supplies without requiring a vehicle to reach remote trail networks.
For commuters, it offers the ability to carry a laptop, clothing, lunch and shopping while taking the dirt route home.
And for riders who simply enjoy exploring, the additional capacity removes the pressure to return to the car before sunset. Pack a jacket, lights, food and a small camp setup, then continue beyond the usual turnaround point.
Australian road use
The Australian-market Levo 4 X has assistance limited to 25km/h and a maximum continuous rated output of 250 watts in accordance with the applicable EN15194 electrically power-assisted cycle standard. The motor’s advertised 850-watt figure refers to peak output and should not be confused with its continuous legal rating. Riders should always check the regulations applying to the roads, paths and trails on which they intend to use the bike.
Who is the Levo 4 X for?
The S-Works Levo 4 X will not be the right bike for every rider. Someone who only wants the lightest possible e-MTB for short trail laps may be better served by a lighter platform. Likewise, a rider who exclusively needs to carry large loads around town may find a dedicated cargo bike more practical.
The Levo 4 X is aimed at the rider who wants one premium bike to perform several very different roles — and who does not want practical carrying capacity to come at the expense of real mountain-bike performance. It is for the rider who sees a fire trail and wonders where it goes. The person who would rather ride to the trailhead than load a bike onto a car. The adventurer who wants to carry enough equipment to stay out overnight but still enjoy every technical descent along the way.
A new kind of freedom
At $21,600 AUD, the 2027 Specialized S-Works Levo 4 X sits firmly at the premium end of the electric mountain-bike market. Its value is not based on being the cheapest way to transport equipment or the lightest way to ride singletrack. Its appeal comes from combining abilities that have rarely existed in one bicycle. It has the suspension, brakes, drivetrain and geometry of a serious trail bike. It has the power and battery capacity to tackle substantial distances and elevation.
It has integrated storage and up to 22 kilograms of rack capacity. Most importantly, it gives riders the freedom to leave the car behind, carry what they need and make the ride itself the adventure.
